Soil & Compost Guide

Why Nutrient-Rich Soil is SO Important, and Ways to Improve Your Soil Quality

TOPSOIL

Healthy soil is the key to unlocking your garden’s potential

What Good Topsoil Should Actually Do

A healthy, fertile topsoil will provide water, nutrients, oxygen and ample room for roots to anchor and grow. The less dense and darker in color the better. Soils you want to avoid planting in are highly compacted or soil dense with clay. This can make it difficult for roots to grow and oxygen to reach them.

Kern’s Enriched Topsoil

Kern Landscape Resources (KLR) is one of the metro’s largest recyclers and producers of topsoil. We accept used soil, age it and screen it with a small amount of vegetative compost to create a light, oxygen rich base for gardening and yard projects of any kind.

Enhancing Your Topsoil

For best gardening results, you will want to supplement your soil with nutrients and organic material at the beginning of each growing season. Not only will your plants appreciate the nutrient-boost, but the oxygenation your soil will receive when incorporating new material will wake up dormant nutrients and provide a better foundation for root growth. Composted materials can be great supplements.

We have pre-made soil blends available daily, and are happy to make custom mixes upon request

COMPOST

properly composted manure has numerous benefits

Composted Cow Manure

Manure can greatly improve your soil’s moisture retention, and provides a slow release of nutrients that are beneficial to your soil. Don’t let previous experiences with odorous products deter you. Our product is well composted and any scent will dissipate once incorporated into your garden.

Vegetative Compost

Compost is broken down organic material (leaves, grass, plant material, etc.) and can offer many benefits when incorporated into garden soil. Compost goes a long way in improving soil structure, and the nutrient benefits are immense. We have all heard about the benefits of a well-balanced diet for humans. Vegetative compost is the best way to provide a well balanced diet for your plants.

At KLR, we accept garden waste and turn it into compost over a 12-18 month aging process. Once it’s properly aged, we screen it and make it available for consumer use and in our proprietary Garden Blends.
