Organic Grower’s Mulch (Composted Manure + Pine Fines 1:1 ratio)

OGB (Organic Grower’s Blend)

  • OGB is made of 2/3 cow manure (anti biotic and hormone free) + 1/3 compost (vegetative and screened).

  • It does NOT contain any soil.

  • The OGB is great for adding a boost of all natural fertilizer and nutrients to soil.

  • Used for growing vegetables, perennial gardening, and organic gardens.

  • It’s the secret sauce for any garden.

RGB (Raised Garden Blend)

  • The RGB is a three way blend of soil/compost/manure (plus a dash of pine fines for aeration).

  • RGB is used for raised garden beds or in-ground planting.

What is the difference between RGB (Raised Garden Blend) and OGB (Organic Grower’s Blend)?

  • The RGB (Raised Garden Blend) has soil and is planting ready.

  • The OGB (Organic Grower’s Blend) has no soil and is not planting ready.

  • The OGB (Organic Grower’s Blend) needs to be mixed with a soil medium such as topsoil, potting soil, peat moss, or pine fines.

Kern gardening tips on which soil to choose and why:

  • If you are starting a NEW raised garden bed or in-ground landscape bed and they are EMPTY we recommend starting with the RGB (Raised Garden Blend). This is because your growing medium needs some topsoil to start. The topsoil will provide the structure and foundation to the garden beds. This will allow the compost and manure to work their magic.

  • If your raised garden bed or in-ground landscape bed already have soil and you’re looking to simply top them off or just give them a boost we recommend adding the OGB (Organic Grower’s Blend) or some combination of compost and manure. This will add an instant shot of natural fertilizer and nutrients to the existing soil.

Try a Truck Mix!

We offer the Truck Mix if you want to customize your own soil blend or you’re buying large quantities of soil amendments.

  1. Decide what soil amendments you want. Choose from: topsoil, compost, manure, pine fines, Raised Garden Blend, or Organic Grower’s Blend.

  2. Decide the quantity of each soil amendment. Quantities are loaded by the cubic yard. We offer: quarter yard, half yard, three quarter yard, or whole yard.

  3. EXAMPLE of a Truck Mix order: Compost (2 yards) + Manure (1 yard) + Topsoil (2.5 yards)

  4. DELIVERY: We load your soil amendments into the Kern delivery truck in alternated layers like a lasagna. Then the soil amendments are mixed when the product is unloaded at the delivery site.

  5. PICK UP: Bring in a truck or trailer and pick up your own Truck Mix. Note: the total amount of Truck Mix received will depend on your order and your vehicle. This is because most average pick-up trucks can only carry a total of 1 yard to 1.5 yards due to weight of soil and soil amendments.

Grass Seed

Not all grass seed blends are created equal. Especially here in Minnesota where the climate can be quite demanding. So, choosing the right product for your seeding and lawn project matters more than you think. You can buy grass seed at a big box store. But those grass seed mixtures are sold for a wide range of states with a wide range of climate zones. They simply aren’t designed to survive more than a season in Minnesota because most of the seeds are annuals! Don’t be fooled! Buy our perennial grass seed blends that are northern turf grasses specifically selected for our tough Minnesota climate and soil.

Kern offers perennial grass seed in convenient 3 lbs. bags, 5 lbs. bags, and by the pound. Our blends include:
